Testing

The foundation of U.S. Figure Skating (USFS) is the test structure, which determines a skater's level for qualifying competitions and other skill-based activities. Competitive skaters are required to take tests, but recreational skaters can also choose to test to challenge themselves and measure their skating abilities. The tests become progressively more difficult as skaters advance through the levels. A skater who passes the final test in a given discipline becomes a U.S. Figure Skating Gold Medalist for that discipline.

Note: As of July 1, 2023, USFS has renamed test types and test levels and is adding new tracks for solo and partnered pattern dance. Read more about the changes here.

How to Test

In-person tests are hosted by a figure skating club, with skaters assigned specific test times. Skaters are judged by panels of USFS officials and receive their results the same day. 

Virtual tests can run similarly to in-person tests by scheduling skaters for specific test times but replacing the panel of officials with a videographer. Or the entire session can be virtual, with submissions uploaded through a system provided by the figure skating club and judged remotely. With virtual tests, there is a delay in receiving results.

FSCSM periodically hosts or co-hosts testing sessions. Upcoming tests will be announced via email and our website. You can also find test sessions by going to EntryEeze and selecting Find a Test Session. From there, you can enter your zip code to find the available test sessions closest to you.

Permission to Test Form

Current FSCSM members in good standing who need a permission form to test with another club can download one from FSCSM’s Entryeeze website.

1. Click on “Existing Members.”

2. Enter the email address and password you used when you registered for membership.

3. Select your skater in the “Family Members” box.

4. Click on the “Download permission form” button.
